The Go-Giver

Have we said goodbye to good old fashioned manners ?

I've started reading Bob Burg and John David Mann's 'The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea', which is particularly poignant at Christmas time. We all want to give give give, but these feelings of 'giving' seem to be limited to our bubble of loved ones. 'Ikea' sale shopping for new house stuff illuminated this for Dan and I when we found ourselves in a battle to get a car parking space. I think we have become to believe that it is always a dog-eat-dog world out there and that anyone outside of the core 'unit' is a threat to our humanity. Hilarious when you realise that you are fighting over a car parking space! We see "a world of competition rather than one of co-creation [and therefore] see the world as a place of limitation rather than a place of inexhaustible treasures" ('The Go-Giver').

Yet I think one of the simplest ways to start giving back to the planet is with good old-fashioned manners. At my Grandad's funeral everyone commented on his politeness. This compliment made me realise how undervalued politeness is in contemporary culture. It's such a simple way of giving out good vibes to the world without having to do anything great or ground breaking.

And it really does make you feel good! Smiling at the enraged Audi driver and letting them go in front of us was so simple and so satisfying.

My favourite quotes from 'The Go-Giver':

“Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”

“Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.”

"As long as you’re trying to be someone else, or putting on some act or behavior someone else taught you, you have no possibility of truly reaching people. The most valuable thing you have to give people is yourself. No matter what you think you’re selling, what you’re really offering is you."

[Givers] love to give. That’s why they’re attractive. Givers attract.”
