WHAT I WOULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF: PART 2
Continuing on from my last article- here are 5 further instructions I would tell my mini-me. Note I said ‘mini-me’ this time and not ‘younger self’ because I think the latter slightly hints at regret. In the words of Edith Pilaf (or strictly speaking the lyrics of Michel Vaucaire) "Non, je ne regret rein”. As some smart, soulful person once said- “there are no regrets in life, just lessons learned.” So I shall share with you 5 more learnt lessons from my life…so far!
6. No one can do a better job at being you than you
Don’t get trapped by “compare and despair” syndrome. Own who you are and what you do and sell that to the world. A prime example of this is in my work as an actress. Not even Judi Dench could do a better job at playing ‘me’ than I can. So start with your best foot forward and sell your unique self to the world…warts and all!
7. Slow down.
Don’t worry about doing everything now. Travel isn’t limited to your teenage years. Prime example: my 56 year-old mum just returned from the Philippines, where she was volunteering as a nurse.
8. Don’t decide it all now.
When I was picking my GCSEs (and later my A-Levels), it felt like the MOST important choice I would ever make. But a few years on and I can barely remember what modules I studied. Stop trying to lock down what you want to be. I say this because opportunities arise all over the place and you might miss out if you don’t remain open minded. Feel free to have a dream, an ambition, a goal- but stay flexible, open and wise to the world around you (and you will reap the rewards!)
9. Go with the flow…
This one can be tricky to employ in your day-to-day life, particularly when the going gets tough. But ride out the waves and eventually you’ll find some shore :) As the saying goes- you've got to take the rough with the smooth!
10. The greatest thing you’ll thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and to be loved in return.
I know I stole this one from the Nat King Cole (no- not from ‘Moulin Rouge’- listen to the original ‘Nature boy’ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaDyA2pFmHw ) but it’s just so damn true. Let those lyrics lead your life.
