AN OPEN LETTER TO MY FILIPINO FAMILY
Dear The Messina Family,
I cannot find the right words to express how grateful I am for the kindness and accommodation I received from all of you over the past 3 months. You have just offered me a house- but a home- and you have welcomed to me into your family with open arms. I never thought I would say this, but I actually feel comfortable and somewhat at home in a culture that felt so alien to me 12 weeks ago! Thank you for adjusting to me also, as I know ‘vegetarianism’ is not common in the Philippines (and I apologise again for not eating the family favourite….pork!) But whilst we are on the subject of food I want to take this opportunity to thank Lola Emma (and Aunty Marie) for preparing some of the best dishes I have ever eaten! I am going to miss waking up to prawns and catfish for breakfast (cereal is going to seem so dull by comparison!) There has not been a single day where I haven’t felt well looked after and bosog (‘full!’) I will never forget the time when Lola woke up at 1am to feed us a proper meal after our trip to Manila! Lola, you are honestly one of the kindest and most hospitable people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and I cannot thank you enough :)
I am really going to miss the daily routines that we have formed together, for example, sharing a coffee with Teddy on the balcony and Kenneth’s daily joke that he will cook my puppy for dinner! I am also going to miss the kids- there has never been a dull day in the house thanks to this lively bunch! After a long, hard day at work Sam-Sam never fails to put a smile on my face, Ashley will run through our ‘high 5’ hand shake and Patricia will always crack a joke (normally about my badly pronounced tagalong!) I am the youngest in my family, so I’ve never had the opportunity to live with younger siblings before. So thank you for making this experience so much fun and for helping me to rediscover my inner-child again!
The Messina’s are such a close and loving family and I feel honoured to have shared a part of our lives with you. You are like family to me and are always welcome to visit my home, if you ever find yourselves in the UK.
I do not want to say goodbye as I am hopeful that we will stay in touch and that someday, we will meet again.
So God bless and see you soon.
All my love,
