In this article I’m going to be exploring the idea of ‘retreat.’ By going on my own personal retreat journey and developing a DIY retreat I hope to share some insights into the real reasons we retreat. Are retreats essentially self-indulgent mini-breaks? Or do they...

I recently discovered an unpublished article from July 2017. I wrote it the night before the first- of two- quite complex knee surgeries. Hindsight is a wonderful thing as I can now see how much I have learnt from the experience. In fact, I am truly grateful for th...

Last year, both Royal Princes shed light on the stress they had suffered after the tragic loss of their mother Princess Diana. This was an unprecedented step away from the ‘stiff upper lip’ approach traditionally expected from establishment figures. Now Prince Will...

Stepping out of our comfort zone can be scary. So why should we - or would we- want to do it more? In this article I’m looking at how a 10-day honeymoon inadvertently functioned as a self-development retreat- pushing boundaries, rebooting the body, broadening persp...

Uncomfortable as it might be, let's start by thinking about all the stuff that gets left behind once we’re dead. The stuff in attics, garages and storage units. In the U.S., 90% of the 2.3 billion sqft of total storage space available is occupied. Given that 65% of...

3 weeks ago today I married my best friend...

I’m a big believer in never visiting the same place twice. Simply because I’m so aware of how big the world is and how much there is I want to see. And in general, I stick to that mantra. Except where Cornwall is concerned. I just can’t get enough of Cornwall’s qua...

The last time I embarked on a juice cleanse I was at a retreat in a remote part of Cambodia. We woke up with sun salutations, replaced meal times with massages and spent our afternoons strolling along beautiful beaches or reading in a hammock. It was the perfect pl...

I’m waiting in line for a coffee and I’ve already whipped out my smartphone- scanning, swiping and sending- simply to fill time. Or perhaps I should say to save time because I use the 30-second wait to send an email and post ‘Happy Birthday!’ on a friend’s Facebook...

I hadn’t planned on drinking so much, but one cheeky mid-week beverage turned into several when wine flowed as quickly as conversation. Even my university years failed to increase my alcohol tolerance and 2 glasses in I’m talking too loudly and flushing crimson! Ap...

Freedom makes freelancing particularly attractive because you can do precisely as you please with no one to answer to. You are not tied down to typical hours, holiday restrictions and rules. So if you want to watch ‘This Morning’ in your pyjamas on a Tuesday mornin...

Online dating has come a long way since ‘You’ve Got Mail’, the 1998 movie in which Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love via an internet chat room. Dating apps, such as 'Tinder', 'Happn' and 'OKCupid' are rapidly becoming one of the most popular ways of seeking a rel...

“Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in educati...

Heading home after half a week in Wales and I'm feeling wonderful.

It might sound a bit cliche (and a copycat of Cameron Diaz' experience in 'The Holiday') but a cute little cottage in the countryside provides the perfect city-detox. By situating myself in a setting...

Continuing on from my last article- here are 5 further instructions I would tell my mini-me. Note I said ‘mini-me’ this time and not ‘younger self’ because I think the latter slightly hints at regret. In the words of Edith Pilaf (or strictly speaking the lyrics of...

ABOUT ME

My name is Katie and I'm passionate about the power of storytelling and how we can use it in our everyday lives to consciously create the lives that we want to lead. That's my why. The what is that I'm a coach, writer, yoga teacher, speaker and the founder of a yoga life coaching company called YOCO. I am also incredibly proud to be a part of 4D HumanBeing, an international leadership development and communication skills company.

Last year brought about a lot of exciting change: I got married to my best friend in June and we moved to the USA in August! We're currently living in Charlotte, North Carolina and we plan to travel all over the Americas. So we will be blogging about our adventures, our experiences as expats and our relationships, with ourselves, each other and our new community. This is a blog about everyday wellness; the yoga that happens off the mat; but mostly, it's a blog about being well and truly human. Here are some examples:

-I quit vipassana (a 10-day silent retreat) after 26 hours.

-I often often skip shavasana and yet, if you click here you'll find a whole article on the benefits of this lying down posture at the end of a yoga practice.

-I became a vegan, simply because it made me feel morally better than everyone else. Turns out I like eggs more than morals.

-I set up Monday evening Spanish Night to motivate Dan and I to learn a language. In reality, Spanish night involves us drinking Rioja and eating tapas.
